CHAPTER 11

Zoe

“Love is a strange dark magic, where death may only make it stronger. The softest kiss in the wrong direction can steal it away forever.”

Atticus

Love.

I remembered when my mother told me that love was the most powerful tool of all. Mightier than the sharp blade of a sword, stronger than the claws of death. And unyielding to the effects of black magic.

I’d always thought that she had been talking about the love she had for my father, but now I wondered if she was just ensuring that I would hold her thoughts and wishes, her knowledge and wisdom, passing it on in case something had happened to her. And it had happened, her mind stolen at an early age. I’d been so angry when she’d started becoming forgetful, frustrated with her when she’d lock her keys in her car or inside the house with no other way to get in.

More than a handful of times I’d been forced, as I used to call it, to come to her aid. Now I was not only regretting my fury with her but would give anything to hear her sparkling laughter of embarrassment as she tried to explain why she’d closed the door behind her. It had taken three years to have her diagnosed, three years I’d wasted, refusing to acknowledge the signs and my medical training. Three years of her life I could have made better for her.

Guilt remained as well as hatred of that person I’d become. So driven. Ready to ignore everything and everyone around me. Now? I was torn between what seemed like two worlds: my world of scientific reality, everything easy to explain by science, and the hazy, dark place of black magic and voodoo.

I’d seen his eyes, the bright crimson rimmed in gold. I’d also caught a glimpse of the man’s soul, expecting to find nothing of value or any concept of love or even loyalty. I was wrong. Dead wrong. The man was a complex combination of everything he’d been exposed to in his life. Family values. Respect. Honor. Death. Murder. And most of all, the truth that he and his entire family had been forced to accept, that he was only part human.

What seemed shattered was his humanity, as if the man was teetering on the very edge of falling into the never-ending pit the curse had created. I knew this without understanding much of the curse itself. Once he tumbled over the precipice, he would never return.

Wolves.

Over the last few weeks, I’d heard the accounts from witnesses who’d seen the creatures that had been attacking people in the city. Their accounts had been ridiculous, or at least I’d thought at the time. Oversized creatures with large heads and muscular legs, paws the size of small plates. And eyes of the devil. I’d laughed more than once at the stupid representation. Stories that were passed from one individual to another were always embellished until they were larger than life.

But every single person had painted a picture that was almost exactly the same.
